Little Treasures

Is motherhood a thankless job? At times, it can certainly feel that way, can’t it? Coming off from the Mother’s Day high where we are gifted with sleeping in, breakfast not made by us, and adorable handmade cards from the ones who call us mom; there’s no doubt we felt the love and gratitude.

But, what happens as the week starts to take hold? We often we go through our days dressing, feeding, and cleaning these pint size replicas of ourselves and come 5 o’clock, we’re more than ready to throw in the towel.

If one of our mini-me’s dares to ask for a snack just at the moment we’re heading upstairs for bedtime, that request will most certainly be met with a growl and a frown. At least, that’s how it goes in my household.

On many days, seeing the beauty and magic that is being a child can be difficult when we are mired in the drudgery of the day to day business of raising and caring for our children.

However, in this quiet morning, as I sit here with my delicious cup of coffee, stealing some me time before the hustle and bustle begins, this is what I see…

Two tiny handprints separated by a red heart hanging just above the small table in our kitchen. I am reminded of the day Little Sister brought this home and how happy she was when I hung it on that wall.

Next, a giant mug, hand painted with flowers and a bird. A single white flower is carefully planted inside. According to Big Brother, it would bloom in two days…it did and it is lovely.

On the counter sits a giant lady-bug, cut out carefully by Big Brother and inside it reads: I spotted the best mom in the world- YOU!

Walking around the corner now, with coffee in hand, I see Little Sister’s smiling face peeping through a hand painted flower frame. I can’t help but smile myself when I come across it.

Now I’m in the playroom that was once a dining room. I see a kite, a portrait of me, and a sunny day scene…all made by the tiniest hands in this house.

These little treasures surround us. They are gifts bestowed upon us from the little ones who love us most. So, while they might not always say the words thank you, or their demands seem endless…we are clearly the ones always on their minds.

Do these little treasures make up for stalling at bedtime, the poopy talk they can’t seem to get enough of, or the constant jumping on the ottomans even after being asked to stop for the tenth time?

Yes…I believe they do. Most of the time anyway.

These little treasures, well, they keep me going when the day gets long and I’m wishing for bedtime. I just have to remind myself to stop, look around, and bask in the joy of their childhood.

What treasures have you found lurking around your house lately?

Now that Ellie is in preschool, we have more and more little surprises around the house. Drawings of our family, art projects, it all makes me smile. :)

I agree. These little treasures do make up for the frustrations… we just have to take the time to try to remember during the trying times!

LOVE this post and the previous one. It's really fun to walk around my house and look at reminders of little hands from years ago — even more so, as I have an idea of what those boys are becoming. Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day.

I love all the little treasures of childhood. We have several frames pieces of art, and a shelf full of pottery and other art pieces.

And by little treasures, I assume you aren't referring to the string cheese-Ritz cracker goodie my daughter left me wedged between the tv and the wall…right? Haha.

Actually, my walls are decorated with framed fingerpaintings and other misc art projects we put together. I have one particular painting that we both did that included our handprints. And I treasure it.

I have a "hug" that Jack made me – a paper heart with a paper arm extending from each side. It says "Mom, I love you this much." I taped it over the entryway doorframe :).

Maybe because of my daughter's autism, I don't take a lot for granted. Especially since she's been maturing by leaps and bounds, I enjoy the little things!

On the days when I feel like motherhood is a thankless job my mother says, "Once they are older you will forget the sleepless night, the tears, and drudgery. You will remember the smiles, laughter, and wish it where back again." My girls are too little to give me many homemade surprises but I am surprised each day at their smiles, laughter, and their new achievements! My 11-month-old just mastered walking and is surprising us with new and amazing feats each day! My 2-year-old surprises me with her new and developing vocabulary and understanding of the world!

In addition to the handmade gifts and poems written with love, I can't bear to put away picutures of my kids when they were younger. They grow up so fast I love to see their chubby little baby faces and wavier/curlier hair!

We've been doing a coloring activity every day & he's getting the hang of it. So we've been hanging stuff up all over the place! I'm loving it!

I love this post. I've been feeling the same way lately. With my husband away the days can seem endless at times, but I try to stop and look at my treasures a few times a day. I don't want them to end…

Sweet, Dr. Mom! What a lovely lovely post. I am surrounded with little treasures that keep me grounded and remind me of the blessing of these children I have had . . . little scraps of paper with the words "I love Mom" that I find here or there, or pictures my girls of drawn of me with a super big smile – those are the treasures that warm my heart constantly. Haven't been by in a while (sorry for that), but just wanted to leave you a note – hope all is well with you!!!

Oh, the treasures keep me going…they really do! I am not a big saver of stuff, but I have saved many of my favorite portraits and things the kids have made over the years.

Sometimes one will take me by surprise, found in a cupboard or in the back of a drawer. Love that.
