Ask Dr.Mom

My dear readers, I need your help and advice. I am considering doing a weekly Ask Dr.Mom feature where you submit your questions and I choose one or two to highlight and answer in a blog post. This would be done every Wednesday and would include your question and my viewpoint on the particular topic being discussed.

What do you think? Is this something you would be interested in? Let me preface this by saying that I do not consider myself a parenting expert. I am learning as I go just as you are. However, I am a pediatrician by training and I like to use that knowledge base combined with my personal experiences and a little dash of common sense. If you’ve been reading my blog for some time now, you know that I don’t always follow the “rules” and that I firmly believe that parenting and motherhood are not one size fits all.

That being said, I love tackling parenting and health related issues that we all face. The best part is I can always count on you, my readers, to also share your experiences and tips. I think this would make for great discussions on Wednesdays.

So please let me know what you think. Shoot me an e-mail now if you have some burning questions and we can get started next week. Ask Dr. Mom may just become a new weekly feature…we’ll see.

I think this is a great idea! I've sometimes wanted to ask you medical questions, but then figured you'd get lots of that and didn't want to bother you! :)

My current question is: How long is normal for a child to have a cough before you get concerned and is there anything you can do to help alleviate it? (Levi is going on nearly 4 weeks now, but all other symptoms are gone. Wondering if I should take him in again…)

I would love to read something like this! I think my own pediatrician is sick of hearing from me every week… I may be sending some questions your way…

I like it…I don't have any burning questions at the moment (important questions not questions about burning things) but I'm sure I'll have some down the line for you!

Sounds great! We all need someone to ask. I want to know if it's normal to still have tantrums at age 5?

I love this idea! I always think of questions the minute I leave Maya's doctor office. I will be compiling a list and I assure you that you'll regret this idea. :)

Just kidding – seriously, I think it's great. Can't wait to read other people's questions as well.

You are completely reading my mind! I was just thinking about your Dr. Mom post earlier and I thought, "I wonder why she doesn't do a Q&A type post"…so, here is my question:

Is it okay to mix antibiotics in with a small amount of juice? My little Chloe is giving us a very difficult time. She does not want to take her meds. If it is not okay…any suggestions?

Yay!!! I think this is a great idea, Dr. Mom. I love your advice because just like you say, you don't always do everything straight by the books–you do what feels right and add in that "dash of common sense."

yes please!!! couldnt write an email (didnt work for me for some reason), but here is my question: my 18 mo busted his forehead over the eyebrow this week, had to get 7 (!!!) stitches. his eye is sort of puffy and reddish (i mean the skin around it), how long does it stay that way? also, we were prescribed some antibiotics as i guess "just in case" thing. how necessary is to take them? im giving them to him, but im not a big fan of giving antibiotics for every little thing… we are actually travelling outside the country, so i cant even call my ped.

I think it would be great! What you bring to the table is your experience from both sides of the examining table. So, it's not like people expect you to be The Expert, but you bring a different perspective to parenting issues, whether a hot topic or a simple question.

I always felt like I got more out of the opinions of our pediatricians who had kids themselves, and had been in the trenches. More practical advice, more sharing of alternative ideas.

Have fun! Hope you do it.

I think it's a fantastic idea!!! I have the utmost respect for you, not only because you are a pediatrician, but simply because of the great stuff I've read that you've already written about on your blog. I would be blessed to read your thoughts on whatever the topic may be. So, I totally support it!

I'm sure I'd come up with a question here or there.

What an amazing idea! Right up your alley. I love it. Sorry I've been away a while. Life has been insane. I'll think up some questions for you and send them over. In the meantime, I can't wait to see your new feature!
