A letter to my son about his little sister

Little sisters are the best.

No wait…4 year old little sisters are the best.

No…wait…if you happen to be a certain 7 year old Big Brother, your Little Sister is the best.

Case in point…

When you accompany me to pick up Little Sister from preschool, she immediately spots you, takes off running towards you with her arms wide open. All the while, excitedly and happily shouting your name.

She’s proud to be your Little Sister. And all she wants is a hug.

A hug.

Is that so wrong?

I know you like to shrug her off. Run away from her and refuse all her attempts for a little attention.

But she loves you.

And honestly, what other time in your life will there be a person so excited and happy to see you that they will run towards you with such unbridled enthusiasm and love?

Accept it. Take it in my dear son. Bask in that kind of pure, unadulterated love.

It wasn’t long ago that you greeted me the same way.

And I treasured it. Still do.

Your Little Sister? She looks up to you. Wants to be like you. Cheers you on during soccer and baseball games.

She just may be your biggest fan.

I know the drill as far as sibling relationships go. It’s a seesaw of emotions. Negotiations. Frustrations. A forever playmate whether you want them there or not.

I know sometimes she knocks down precious Lego creations or “steps on your words” when you’re talking.

But you know what else?

She’s content, at peace, and feels so safe when she snuggles up next to you as you read her a bedtime book.

She loves crazy dancing with you, jumping in mud puddles with you, playing trucks with you (even if her stuffed animals soon take a starring role), and talking to you about her day.

She misses you when you’re gone at school and she’s home with me.

Sure she can be sassy, a little bossy at times, and will always let you know what’s on her mind.

But more than anything, you can rest assured that her love for you is like the moon. Always there. Sometimes hidden from sight. Sometimes, shining so incredibly bright for the world to see.

So please, for the love of God…let your Little Sister hug you at preschool pick-up.

You will make her day.

And in return, she just may make yours.

Perfect post! I have to often remind my 9 year old that his little 5 year old brother adores him, that he is truly the best super hero there is, and to not do anything to crush that image.

Such an incredibly sweet post! Print this and put it in his baby book…or some scrapbook for the future. Love it!

The way you explained their love made it so special and magical just as it should be, I love the way you phrased that!

I love this post. I have a 6yo and a 3yo, and it seems the younger is always trying so hard to win the attention and affection of my older daughter. Of course, my older daughter is completely oblivious to the complete adulation.
