Running Toward Six

I stand there on the sidewalk just outside our car. School is over and I’m waiting for you.

I see you just around the corner. You catch sight of me and start running.

I just stand there, watching you…waiting for you.

In my eyes, you are but one. You have a ready and contagious smile. Not yet walking but moving for sure. Your first word was car. Then, we were surprised, now? It all makes sense.

A couple more steps and you’re two. Running as you are now. Talking and constantly on the go. Your love of cars, trains, and trucks has really taken hold. Your big, brown eyes are accentuated by long dark lashes. Beautiful.

More seconds pass and you are three. Our boy who loves chocolate milk. Loves to dig. Loves to run. You are a Big Brother now. A hardship for you at first but you soon settled in to your new role and, oh how Little Sister loves you.

Your legs are getting longer now. Look how fast they move now that you’re four. Your dark, wavy hair flaps around as you run toward me. You grow with each step. Four years old and full of questions about the world.

Closer now, I see your five year old self, running toward me with a huge smile on your face. You are in kindergarten. I can see the holes in the knees of your pants. Something is different though and my heart catches. You are so independent.

In those few short seconds before you reach me there on that sidewalk waiting for you, I wonder whether you’ll jump in my arms like you usually do, or if you’ll casually walk past me into our car.

I can see on your face, you are considering the options yourself. You seem conflicted.

I will myself to keep my arms at my side and let you make the choice. I just smile.

You reach me, my boy, just days away from being six, and all I want to do is scoop you up in my arms and hold on tight.

I wait. Our eyes meet and we both smile.

My arms open and you fly into them. I’ve grown strong and steady since your baby days; I know how to handle these flying leaps of hugs.

How I want to freeze time.

You’re off again, too quickly for me, and you toss your backpack into the car and buckle yourself in.

Holding back my tears, I settle in the driver’s seat and glance in my rear view mirror.

I’m shocked to see you there, not a baby, but a boy with a toothy grin. A boy who just learned how to ride a bike without training wheels. A boy who has recently started to read. A boy who is now demanding some chocolate milk.

You will be six years old tomorrow.

It seems you’ve been running toward six since the day you took your first steps.

Happy Birthday my dear, sweet, rambunctious boy.

My arms will always be open for you.

Good post you wrote, my boy is only 2 1/2 but I can see him growing in your post too. And I hope he keeps loving me the way he loves me now, because I know, I will never stop loving him. All the best for your little ones b-day.

All choked up over here. Such a sweet post! Happy Birthday to your darling boy! I can't stand to think about the day when my 2-year-old won't want to run into my arms. But I guess it's a part of the journey, right?

This post actually hurt to read, it's that good.

I have a 5 year old too. Her sister is 5 months old, and looks just like she did. Memory lane happens each day and reminds me how fast my older daughter is flying through our time together.

    Sigh. Talk about bittersweet!

Isn't it hard to be a mommy?! It's so hard to watch them growing up. With each birthday, it's a celebration…but my heart aches a little.

This is genius. It really does happen that fast. JDaniel will be three in two weeks and I am not sure how he got to be that old.

I hope he has a wonderful birthday!

Oh my goodness, Melissa, I really love this. I'm doing my best to snap up every moment, every milestone and lock it down in my memory while desperately holding on to my daughter's infancy. It happens so fast and you captured that here. So lovely.

I'm on the verge of tears, or perhaps nausea. We're less than a month away from six. How I do want to freeze time.

    Happy Birthday Big Brother!

This is absolutely the coolest post I've ever seen about a child's birthday! I LOVE how you told the story as a progression of age as he was running to you!

Happy 6th birthday to your special little boy! I loved reading this because you captured the years and milestones so perfectly. I envision my little boy at four with tons of questions about the world…but, yes, I'm freezing time right now, so as far as I'm concerned…no more birthdays–my little boy is just gonna stay two. Enjoy those fun, running embraces. There's nothing better than that!

Although mine are younger, I feel that time is slipping by far too quickly. And six is a distant knock that will be here before I know it! Lovely post.

Such a beautiful post, it brought tears to my eyes. I'm a little bit sensitive to the whole "time flies" concept now that my baby's first birthday is a couple weeks away. I can just imagine how you feel, the same way I do multiplied by 100. It would be such a luxury to freeze time, to hold them close a little longer.

Happy birthday to little boy, may all his birthday wishes come true!

Oh I loved this. My girls turn 3 next month and my little one just turned 1. This is a hefty reminder of how fast it's all going.
