Rambunctious Boy
Forever Mine, Like the Sun You Shine
Oh My Darling Rambunctious Boy!
Okay, so I’m no poet…not by a long shot. But in honor of celebrating boyhood this week, this was my attempt at an ode to all rambunctious boys out there! Hooray for boys!
As part of my regular Follow-Up Friday, thought I’d share some information gleaned from a book I’m reading: Boys Should be Boys, 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons by Meg Meeker, M.D. This is a good book, albeit lengthy, but if you dig through it, you can find some pearls of wisdom.  I’ll share some here with you:
  • Know how to encourage your son without being overbearing. This is something I definitely need to work on since I kind of still think of him as my Mama’s Boy, sorry son. I hope to do better and back off now that he’s getting older. I have to remember not to swoop in and rescue him.

  • Spend quality time with your son. They don’t need new toys, new video games, etc…what they need is you. Great advice here and I know I need to remind myself of this daily…to be in the moment, play cars and take part in the conversations he wants to have even it they’re about “lava and how lava can melt your shoes!”

  • Boys need the outdoors. Well I think this is pretty obvious. Get the boys out, let them run, play, and explore. This would be a whole lot easier for me if it wasn’t currently 100 degrees or hotter out here!

  • They need to know they have a purpose in life and you need to know that you (Mom and Dad) are the most important person in his life. So, as the saying goes “lead by example” because those little eyes and ears are watching you.

Once again, a high five to all you rambunctious boys out there…may your weekend be filled with “frogs and snails, and puppy dog tails”! Happy Friday.

This is so true…especially the time for bed part. Can you see that I have not had much sleep lately?

my poor boy is sandwiched between two sisters….and man, oh man, is he completely different from them! we didn't know the gender when i was pregnant with my third child (a girl!) but i just knew it was going to be a boy. now…i am SO thankful ava is a girl because i don't think my house would still be standing if chandler had a partner in crime. although ava is proving to be pretty destructive in her own right 😉

So sweet! Boys are a whole different story!A few weeks ago my daughter looked outside and saw my son and six friends jumping on the trampoline. Well, actually wrestling. Shirtless. She just shook her head. Then one of the boys pulled down his pants and went to the bathroom in the grass. She screamed and ran away. I told her to get used to that sort of thing…they are boys and I still don't understand them.

I love your poem! ;0) I have a 10-year-old boy and I still think of him as a Mama's Boy, too. But I'm seeing him gravitate more and more to his dad (which is natural) so I think things are changing. And I'm trying to not resist the change and embrace new phases of our parent-child relationship. It's hard!! But I wouldn't want a 40-year-old man still living under mommy's roof, so it has to happen! Great tips from the book … thanks for sharing. They are all true!

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog on my ThetaMom feature day. After reading your bio, I think we probably have a lot in common. Following you now!

I'm now a new follower too. I wish I found your blog sooner. You are too humble. Your poem is fantastic. I have a little 23 month old boy, and I agree with all of your tips. (I love the great outdoors too, so I have no problem taking him outside for a trip to the park or to make a mud pie.) Have a wonderful weekend; oh, and I hope you're selected for the Word, Up Yo “Self-Made Man/Woman.” Best wishes!

Fantastic! As a mother of two boys, this makes me so happy. I realize the most important thing I can give my boys is me. The times we spend together being silly or just talking are our most cherished moments.

What do you mean you're not a poet?!! I love this!!! So good. And I love your tips as well. My little guy is just a babe of course, but I love that first one especially. I can already tell how easy it would be for me to want to “protect” him too much… my baby boy, first born love! (No football, no wrestling, no fast cars, no getting hurt!) Oh, being a mommy to a boy is already so awesome and will continue to be so much fun I'm sure. :) But back to your poem – love it! Well done!!

LOVE this poem – do not sell yourself short girl – it's excellent, and so true. With two sweet boys under my roof, sometimes I'm left breathless with the daunting task of raising responsible men (eeeek!!), but it's a challenge I cherish every single day. Especially when I sleep soundly at night thanks to all the action.

(May I get a copy of those links from The Empress? How did I miss celebrating boyhood!? On certain days, raising all boys can feel like a lonely gig in this bloggyworld :-)
